Why you offer a discount before the client even negotiates
You are about to name your price. In the second before the number leaves your mouth, you decide to quickly offer the client a discount. She has not negotiated. She has not said anything yet.
Maybe yours is not a discount. Maybe you rewrite the proposal for the third time before sending it. Maybe you answer the pricing question with “we will see what works for you”. Maybe you reliably get sick during launch week. Afterwards, you are annoyed with yourself because you know better. That is the interesting question: why do you do things you know cost you money? The answer is not in your discipline. It is in the way your brain works.
Your brain does not wait. It predicts.
For a long time, the assumption was that the brain perceives a situation and then reacts. More recent neuroscience paints a different picture. Your brain does not simply react to what is happening now. It predicts what is about to happen based on everything you have ever experienced. It prepares the body before the situation even arrives. Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett therefore describes the brain not as a reaction machine but as a prediction machine.
In concrete terms, this means your system is not reacting to the woman sitting opposite you in the second before you name the number. It is reacting to its prediction of what will happen if you ask for the full price. The prediction does not come from this conversation. It comes from every moment in your life when wanting more was unsafe. The last-second discount becomes the most elegant solution your system knows. It makes the offer smaller before the offer can be rejected.
Why understanding does not change the prediction
This is why all your knowledge has not helped so far. Insight does not update a prediction. You can tell yourself a hundred times that visibility is not dangerous. Your system did not learn through sentences. It learnt through experience and believes only what it experiences differently. A woman can read every book on self-worth. She can still be unable to sleep before a launch. Understanding sits in the mind. The prediction sits deeper.
This is exactly what I experienced myself. For years, I had the tools, the language and the psychoeducation. Nothing shifted because I was trying to solve a prediction problem through understanding.
What actually shifts the prediction
New experiences. Not just any experiences and not all at once. A prediction changes when your system experiences a situation stored as dangerous in a new and safe way. Often enough. In small doses. You name the full price once without a discount and experience that the client still buys. You let yourself be seen and your system notices that nothing collapses afterwards. Every one of those moments is a data point that partly overwrites the old prediction.
This is why I work in doses and in a particular sequence instead of through confrontation. Forcing yourself to withstand the big leap immediately only confirms the old prediction that it really was dangerous. Dividing the same experience into digestible steps gives the system a chance to build a new prediction. Elsewhere, I described why the sequence matters more than the exercise in somatic work. The reason is the same.
What this means for your business
It means your next level is not a motivation problem. The number you do not dare name, the position you do not take and the team member you do not hire are not questions of willpower. They are your body's predictions about what comes with more. That is why growth sometimes feels less like success and more like danger. On paper, you can know exactly how to take the next step. You can still be unable to take it. I wrote about why your business is not failing because of your calendar. It is limited by what your system can carry right now.
The good news is inside the same sentence. A prediction is not a judgement about you. It is an estimate based on old data. Data can be added. Not through more pressure. Through a new experience in a dose your body can process.
This is exactly what I work with: strategy, identity and the nervous system as one system so your next step does not fail at the level of the body. You can find out what that looks like under Solution Design. The best way to find out whether it fits is through a conversation.
